When was the last time you tried something new?
The last time I tried something new was a few months ago when I learned how to line dance. Line dancing involves a choreographed, repeated sequence of steps in which several people are arranged in several rows. Usually, the people all face the same direction and do not come into physical contact with each other, such as is popular in other forms of dance. Line dancing has its origins in the North American country-western style, and for me, learning the principles of line dancing was definitely something new because I really do not have much experience dancing. I had always admired dancing as an artistic form of expression, but I had never learned any particular style of dance before that time. Learning to properly line dance definitely involves the skill of muscle memory, as it requires one to remember when, where, and how to turn. Additionally, one must stay “in line” with the other participants at all times, which, at first, was a challenge for me. However, after a bit of trial and error, I finally started to get the hang of it and I really started to enjoy it! It was a lot of fun! I wouldn’t say that I’ve perfected the art of line dancing by any means, but I am definitely looking forward to trying it again soon. Line dancing is a fun way to participate with other people and feel part of a collective activity. By learning to coordinate my own movements with those of the group and heeding to the lively music, I had the time of my life learning a new skill and a new way of expressing myself through dance.
